| Sales of Blu-ray disc players haven't been helped by the dead of the HD DVD format, according to research firm NPD Group. |

Sales of Blu-ray players, excluding PlayStation 3 game consoles, dropped 40% from January to February in the US, according to NPD. Sales grew only 2% from February to March. The firm didn't release numbers of players sold.
While DVD players cost less than $100, Blu-ray players generally cost $400 or more. In Europe you can get DVD players for about 80 Euros & Blu-ray players costs about 300 Euros.
Another factor that may be holding back sales of Blu-ray players is that anticipated models with Internet connectivity haven't hit the market yet. Current models can't be upgraded. Upgrading capabilities are nescessary, because of problems related to DRM in the past. Sales of the Playstation 3 games console (the most sold Blu-ray player) seem to be recovering, perhaps with help from their built-in Blu-ray players. Sony sold 257,120 units in the US in March this year, but its not sure if they can stand up to Microsoft with their Xbox 360. Microsoft recently dropped the prices of their Xbox 360, which resulted in massive sales. | |
