| Only about 23% of US consumers are likely to buy a Blu-ray player this, or next year, according to a recent consumer survey |

One of the results of the survey showed high Blu-ray player prices are barriers to wider adoption. "We expect that player prices will remain above $300 for Tier One models for the remainder of this year," according to a spokesman of ABIresearch. This comes as no surprise, as rescent results showed Blu-ray Player sales dropped 40%. Also in Europe Blu-ray isn't a succes, especially discs sales is still very low, probably because of the over-priced, old movies which are available in European shops. Hollywood has still not learned from the past, because we also had this situation when DVD was introduced in Europe; overpriced/old movies & region-protected players. More & more HD enthusiasts are more likely to invest in a mediaplayer, or HTPC who can play downloaded x264 files, which are widely available on HDTV Torrent-sites & Newsgroups. Microsoft is more realistic about these developments & promotes legal downloads of HD movies, sadly still not available in all European countries though... The ABI consumer survey results indicates how many consumers plan to purchase a BD player in the next 12 & 24 months, as well as how many have no plans to buy one. It also examines the reasons why consumers are holding back from making this purchase. | |
