This update allows standard definition videos to play on external displays without HDCP support, but this update does not allow the playback of HD content on external displays.
It's a shame Apple doesn't mention anything about the HD restriction, as you can see in the release notes:
This update is recommended for owners of MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro with Mini DisplayPort. The update addresses an issue where some standard definition purchases from the iTunes Store do not play on some external displays.
