The successor of MP3 is mp3HD, this lossless audio codec is backward compatible to the existing MP3 file format.
|

mp3HD Overview
- mp3HD is a lossless audio codec (100% bit-exact replica of CD tracks)
- Backward Compatible to mp3
- Bitrates for music approximately 500 to 900 kbps rates (similar to other lossless codecs), depending on genre
- Embedded mp3 track and the mp3HD file share the same id3 metadata
- Encoding parameters (e.g. bit rate), ancillary data & meta data of embedded mp3 track are under control
A typical mp3HD file of 4 minutes will have a file size of about 25 MB (876 kbit/s bitrate) For MP3 players this format is way too big, but for MP3 file servers (MP3 streaming) or HD movies this is an interesting option.
Currently there are mp3HD software Toolkits available for both Windows & Linux, so you can encode mp3HD files yourself (only allowed for personal and non-commercial purposes).
You can download the mp3HD Toolkit v1.4 for Windows here & the Linux mp3HD Toolkit v1.4 here.
