| DVB-T2 the successor to the existing DVB-T broadcasting standard was successfully tested by the BBC, so in the near future it will be possible to watch HD with DVB-T2 receivers. |

DVB-T2 provides additional bandwidth, compared to DVB-T. The switch to DVB-T2 will enable HD content to be available with just terrestrial broadcasting, instead of satellite, or cable. DVB-T2 replaces the "old" MPEG2 compression technology with the more recent MPEG4 compression technology, which consumes less bandwidth & uses less processing power.
Test transmissions performed by the BBC in the UK have successfully received HD signals compliant to the DVB-T2 standard using a real-time demodulator. According to the BBC this is the 1st time anywhere in the world that a live end-to-end DVB-T2 chain has been demonstrated.
3 HD stations will be available OTA in the UK by 2009, one of which will be owned by the BBC and the other two by ITV, Channel 4 or Five.
